Kansas Historical marker: Homestead of a genius

County History:

  • Founded February 26, 1867
  • Named after Noah V. B. Ness, a corporal in Company G, Seventh Calvary who died of
    wounds received during the Civil War on August 11, 1864.
  • Only Kansas county named after a corporal.
  • Courthouse lawn displays a statue of Corporal Ness.
  • Ness County history is on display at the Ness County Historical Society Museum

Fun Facts:
The Ness County Bank Building, known as the Skyscraper on the Plains, is one the Kansas 8 Wonders of Architecture buildings

  • The bank building was once the tallest building between Topeka and Denver
  • Made from local products and was completed in 1890.
  • Building features four stories of 13' ceilings and four vaults.
  • Prairie Mercantile store currently resides in the bank building and sells official Kansas products.
  • Profits from this store go directly toward restoration of the bank building.
