WHS building Accreditation Status: Fully accredited - Quality Performance Accreditation (QPA)

Years of Service: 75+ years

Mascot: Thunderhawks
  • New mascot under cooperative agreement
  • Formerly known as Wheatland Shockers
History:
  • South end of the building built in 1931
  • North addition constructed in 1961
  • Served as a 1st-8th grade education institution until 1980
  • Kindergarten—added later as a half-time program/Now is a full day - 5 day/week program
  • Head Start (now a home-based program) and Preschool programs added in recent years
Original Consolidation (1968):
  • Grainfield, Park & Gove unified in the fall 1968 becoming Wheatland USD 292
  • Each community kept its own elementary school from 1968 until:
    - Gove Elementary closed in May of 1988 & Park Elementary closed in May of 1991
    - Students attended Grainfield Elementary
  • Name changed from Grainfield Elementary to Wheatland Elementary
  • 7th & 8th students attended middle school at the Wheatland Middle School-High School building starting around 1980
Cooperative agreement with Grinnell, USD 291 (2007):
  • Each town has its own Preschool-4th grade building
  • USD 291's and USD 292's 5th-8th grade students attend Grinnell Middle School located in Grinnell
  • USD 291's and USD 292's Freshmen-Seniors attend Wheatland High School located in Grainfield
